Day 40 (cont.)
Several villagers on hand to greet Mabe on the way into town breathlessly explained what had transpired in his absence and rushed him into the presence of Syreel. Meanwhile, a trio of adventurers including Rodart the dwarf, Atta Tu the magic-user, and Kail, priest of Dagba, had just arrived at the Iron Axe Inn from Wardrum. Expecting to find Morton and Sig awaiting their arrival, they soon learned how their associates had been recruited to investigate some local trouble and that nobody had seen them since the previous day. Seeking to consult the local authority and hopefully discover the whereabouts of their colleagues, they made their way to the Temple of the Good Earth, where they observed Syreel attending the wounded Willem Tanting. At the strangers’ approach, Mabe quickly interposed himself and inquired of their purpose.
Over the course of the ensuing interview, Mabe concluded that the trio might well be of service in resolving Wodfeld’s current crisis and promptly offered terms for temporary employment. After these terms were accepted, Mabe told of his encounter with Ona and produced the scroll detailing the process for creating the potion that the dryad had insisted would be required to defeat the grombel. Syreel quickly delegated to various villagers the task of collecting the necessary ingredients and assigned to the adventurers the task of collecting water from the pool near Lensing Manor, where incidentally, Morton and Sig were supposedly headed when they were last seen.
After a quick investigation confirmed that Morton and Sig never returned to their campsite near the grombel’s lair the previous night, the company cautiously approached the ruins of Lensing Manor. When they had collected the water, they decided to give the ruins a closer look to see if there were any sign of Morton and Sig. Such signs were soon discovered in the form of an opened trap door amidst recently shifted debris, which was soon found to open upon the decayed remains of an old study. Proceeding further, the company soon found itself under assault by several vicious giant cockroaches in an old laboratory. When these vile creatures had been destroyed, the adventurers discovered to their dismay the half-eaten remains of Morton and Sig close at hand. The company next found a passageway terminating in a massive collapse, from beneath which a skeletal arm grasped ancient looking box. This turned out to contain the journal of Lord Albert Lensing himself, along with a large bottle containing what appeared to be a completed batch of the very potion they were hurrying to produce!
Later, pondering these developments with Syreel, the company deduced that the potion was likely to turn them into children for some period of time, leading them to believe that the grombel might be invulnerable to attacks by adults. With this in mind the company members retired for the evening, intending to be as refreshed as possible for their anticipated confrontation with the grombel, either the next day or perhaps the following…
