After the poison gas incident in the hall of statues, the party retired to the grotto in order to recover. Martin took advantage of this time to examine a mysterious tome he had recovered from elsewhere in the dungeon, which proved to be a powerful book of arcane power. Several other items were discovered to be magical as well, including several potions, a scroll with three magical spells, and a dagger. A fourth bottle labeled “antidote” did not radiate magic.
The company returned to the hall of statues a couple days later and after further experimentation discovered the means of opening the two secret doors they had previously located. The first door opened upon a long stairway that descended to a huge cavern with an underground lake, in the middle of which was an island where a strange, bestial humanoid guarded a chest. In spite of its menacing and disturbing looks, the creature greeted the party in a most civilized manner and invited them to guess its riddle. The company succeeded at this challenge, thereby avoiding an unpleasant fate that the creature had hinted would be the consequence of failure. Indeed, he appeared to be most gratified by their success and quickly departed into the darkened waters, leaving them to puzzle over the chest, which proved to be locked and trapped. These impediments proved to be too much for Emil, and the company had to resort to brute force, shattering a bottle and spilling its liquid contents over the rest of the treasure contained within – several hundred gold pieces, a nice sized ruby, and a short sword engraved with the name “Villardo.”
The second secret door leading from the hall of statues opened upon another large, mostly unworked cavern. In the middle of this chamber stood a clay pot overflowing with precious jewels. This was guarded by a single, animated skeletal arm the proved a formidable opponent wielding its rusty blade. After the company succeeded in defeating this guardian, they discovered what proved indeed to be the fabled Crown of Rhivum. Having obtained their objective, they soon departed the dungeon and repaired to Sylo, where they were greeted as heroes and generously rewarded.
